Sahabuddin was a member of the Pabna District Bar Association at the beginning of his career. In 1982, he cleared the BCS (judgement) examination and joined as a judge. In 1995 and 1996, he was elected as the Secretary General of Bangladesh Judicial Service Association.
He retired in 2006 as a district and session judge after serving in various positions in the court. Sahabuddin. He was also the chairman of the labor court.
The then judge Sahabuddin served as the coordinator appointed by the Law Ministry in the Bangabandhu assassination case. After ending his life as a judge, he again returned to the legal profession.
Between 2008 and 2011, he was a Supreme Court lawyer, and the government appointed him as Commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission. He held that duty till 2016.
Soon after the BNP-Jamaat coalition came to power in 2001, Awami League and its affiliates attacked activists and minority communities. Awami League later came to power and formed an inquiry commission into incidents like ‘murder, rape and looting’ of that time. The head of that commission was Sahabuddin Chuppu.
In January 2020, he was elected as a member of the Advisory Council of Awami League. He then served as the Election Commissioner in the last National Council of the party.
Sahabuddin Chuppu was also involved in the journalism profession during his colorful career. Before joining the Judiciary Department, he worked as a journalist in Dainik Banglar Bani for two years from 1980. He was also a member of Pabna Press Club and Annada Govinda Public Library.

Md. Sahabuddin took over as Vice Chairman of Islami Bank in 2017 as a representative of JMC Builders Limited. He was also a member of the audit committee of this bank.
In his personal life, Sahabuddin is the father of one son. His wife Dr. Rebecca Sultana was the joint secretary. He is currently serving as the Academic Advisor of Prime Asia University as well as the Founding Chairman of Friends for Children Organization.
