Strong earthquake shakes Ecuador, at least 14 dead

14 people died and more than 380 were injured in the earthquake, according to the communications agency of the office of the president.

Most of the casualties were from El Oro province, they said.

At least 44 houses were destroyed, while another 90 were partially damaged. As many as 50 educational institute buildings and more than 30 health centers were also damaged.

Landslides caused by the earthquake closed several roads, while the Santa Rosa airport suffered minor damage but did not disrupt air traffic, the agency said.

In an early statement, Ecuador’s Secretariat for Risk Management reported one death after a wall collapsed on a car in Ajuay province.

Other infrastructural damage reported in other provinces included the collapse of a jetty and the wall of a supermarket.
